Le Claire tones up for annual Tugfest

They may need a longer rope to stretch over the swollen Mississippi, but LeClaire's Tugfest '93 will go on this weekend.
LeClaire and Port Byron are vying for an upper hand in this year's great tug-of-war across the Mississippi River, between Illinois and Iowa. Both sides have compiled, to this point, 3 victories in the annual tug-of-war across the river event. The actual tug doesn't' take place until Saturday, August 7 at 1:00 pm, but the festival kicks off Friday night.
An all-you-can-eat barbecue chicken dinner beginning at 5:00pm on Friday will take place at the LeClaire Civic Center. The dinner will cost $6 for adults and $3.50 for kids 10 and under. Children's games, food vendors, arts and crafts booths and the beer tent will open at the levee at 5:00pm as well.
A 7:30 parade will begin at Bridgeview School with the theme "Joined by a River."
Contemporary Christian singer Jennifer Sergeant from Pleasant Valley will entertain along with Funny bone comedians at 8:00 pm. At 9:30, what organizers tout to be the largest fireworks display in the Quad-City area will fill the sky over the Mississippi. Mike Kuk will wrap up the Friday evening's festivities, performing his music from the '50's, 60's, 70's and 80's from 10:00 to midnight.
But then, festival-goers who don't want to miss a beat had better run right home and jump in bed, because at 6:00 am on Saturday, the griddles will start up for the Fireman Pancake Breakfast at the firehouse.
A children's' one-mile run at 8:00 am and a 5K run at 8:30 will both start from Cody School. The competition's continue through the day, with a horseshoe contest at 9:00am, jet ski races at 9:30, a kid's tug along with other games and a dunk tank at 10:00, the big tug at 1:00, a kid's fishing derby from 2:00 until 4:00 pm, bikini and pie eating contests at 3:00, and a kid's tractor pull at 4:00pm.
The Davenport Country Western band The Misfits will take the stage at 7:00 pm. Dan Peart will perform his music at 8:15 after an 8:00pm raffle drawing. Dave Rogers and the folk music of his Sloughwater Band will ferry across the river from the Port Byron festival at 9:30 pm. The popular Quad City area band Nite-Katz will close the TugFest with their blues and rock music from the 50's and 60's beginning from 10:45 to midnight.
Timm Dalman, musician with Jennifer Sergeant, arranged the weekend's lineup of entertainment for Tug Fests both in Iowa and Illinois. The annual event is expected to draw about 30,000 attenders over the weekend.
Sumo wrestling in inflated megasuits and the Velcro jump where participants suit up in Velcro and then hurl themselves into a Velcro wall are oddities which are new to TugFest this year, but may be familiar to those who attended this year's Bix Street Festival.
Entry forms for he kid's tug, the tractor pull, and the pie-eating contest can be picked up at the Tug table outside of Slagles Supermarket and the LeClaire City Hall.
