VINTON – Area youth often complain that there’s nothing to do around Vinton for fun in the summer.
In an effort to offer something fun for the youth to do, the Vinton Ministerial Association and Youth for Christ are planning a fun event for the weekend.
The first ever Youth in the Park is being planned for Saturday, June 14th, 1997. It will be held in Riverside Park in Vinton from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
"It’s a spin-off from Vinton’s Party in the Park celebration, but it’s for the youth," explained Pastor David Gates of First Christian Church, who is helping to organize the event.
Gates found added that all area youth, not just those from Vinton, who have finished seventh grade through those who have just graduated, are invited to take part in the fun event.
Saturday’s festivities will feature fun, friendship, music, games and prizes. Games will include 3-on-3 basketball, ring toss, sand volleyball, sack races, wheelbarrow runs, Hula Hoops, and more. Registration for the 3-on-3 basketball will begin at 3:30 PM.
The highlight of the day will be the Quad Cities’ rock band DOXA.
In addition, free hot dogs, and pop will be served.
In case of rain, the event will be moved into the Washington High School gym.
"We are hoping that this will be well attended by the area youth and become a new Vinton tradition, " Gates said.
